Card 3B

Goal3: Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum

HOME

Standard 3.B: Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.

Number of hours required: Minimum of 5
Number of CEUs to be awarded: Minimum of 0.5, Maximum of 1.0. Number of CEUs awarded will be determined by the number of lessons included.

**Note: No less that 0.5 CEUs can be submitted to Central Office for credit. If only the minimum requirements have been met, this task must be combined with another task(s) to total 0.5 CEUs in order to receive credit.

Overview:

Each classroom contains a diverse population of students. It is important to identify the learning styles of your students so you can best meet the needs of all of your students. There are many learning style assessments and inventories available. A simple set of inventories can be found on the NCWise Owl Kaleidoscope site. For this task, you'll focus on 3 of the inventories: Audio, Visual, and Kinesthetic, Multiple Intelligences, and the Myers-Briggs personality profile. The first two inventories can be used with students as young as second grade. For younger students you may use the first inventory as an observation tool and check off the behaviors you observe for each student.

Learning Styles Inventories -

Meet Your Mode: http://www.ncwiseowl.org/kscope/techknowpark/Secret/ModeSheet.html

A checklist to determine which mode is the strongest for the learner: visual, auditory and kinesthetic/ tactile. This sheet does not allow you to check online, it must be printed.

Pick An Alien: http://www.ncwiseowl.org/kscope/techknowpark/LoopCoaster/eSmartz1.html

Students read through the characteristics of all 8 aliens to determine the one that best describes how they learn. They can click on an alien to read more about that particular intelligence. Have students narrow their choices to one or two.

Welcome to the Caves of the Code Breakers: http://www.ncwiseowl.org/kscope/techknowpark/Secret/Welcome.html

Based upon the Myers-Briggs personality inventory, students enter the caves and read the two descriptions presented. The click on the letter that best describes them. They will receive a more detailed description of the chosen letter, then need to click on next letter at the bottom of the selection. To complete the process, they need to choose a letter from all four sets of letters. At the end they will receive a personality profile that reflects the combination of letters chosen.

A graphic organizer for planning lessons/ units that cover all of the multiple intelligences

Task:
1) Go through each of the inventories listed above to determine your learning styles.

2) Select at least one of the learning styles inventories and have each child complete the activity. If you plan to use the Multiple Intelligence or Myers-Briggs style inventories, you will need to set up a computer time for your students. This can be done in a classroom computer center over time or in a computer lab. Remember: if you need assistance in conducting this lesson contact your media coordinator and/or technology facilitator. They can help you prepare for either scenario.

3) Collect your student's results and analyze the information your found and answer the following question. (Type your information.)

  • What is the predominant learning style(s) in your classroom?
  • What was your learning style and how does it compare with the predominant style in your class? (This is important, because we tend to best connect with students with similar learning and personality styles.)
  • What important information did you learn from conducting this inventory?
  • What types of activities do you need to make sure you include in your lessons so that you are meeting the needs of ALL of the students in your classroom?

4) Read through the articles found at Meeting All Needs Through Differentiation of Instruction. When planning your next lesson, use the strategies you gleaned from the articles to create a lesson that meets the needs of all students in your classroom.

5) Summarize the lesson including details of how you ensured the needs of all students were met. Reflect upon what you learned from the learning styles inventory and how it will change the way you teach your students.

6) To receive CEU credit for your work, submit an electronic copy of your work (data analysis, summary and refection) to cphthisic@ecps.k12.nc.us with the subject line your name task card 3B.
